Alvar Aalto’s work is quite astonishing. His building saynatsalo town hall is my favorite of his that I’ve seen. This build is a center meeting point for the little town. The building was built around a small hill, which was leveled into a central garden. this, in a way, is like the building was formned from the hill. The town hall is shaped as a rectangle with the center opened to be a garden. I find interesting Alvar’s use of brick work. In his expiremental houses, he tries all sorts of different brick patterns. The one he uses is simple, but beautiful. The location of the building is set in an area surrounded by trees. The earth red bricks stand out against the woods in a conflicting contrast. The way the sun moves over the building is well accented with inlets, outlets, and windows. The sight this gives cannot be missed. most of the building is well proportioned to human needs. Some rooms like the city counsil chamber has very tall cealings making the room more powerful.

by looking at relationships between different parts of a body, or different parts in nature, it is obvious to see these patterns and how nature relates to humans and how we sense the world. from sight to sound and even taste.

Maya Lin at the De Young

I advise any one who can, to go to Maya Lin’s exhibit at the De Young. She is a well know landscape designer, but feel her style and system relates to what we’ve been going over in Arch48. At least look up somw of her stuff on line.

This piece is thousands of 2×4 boards cut to lengths from 3” to 10′ all put together to make this art piece.

When I walk through the city as a whole, It is a beautiful place; how all the buildings look when looking at the sky line. My criticism is the building and all the other structures up close are all bland concrete blocks. Where is the color?

today viewing our site. the group was very productive with how we are going to lay it out. Having identified the six main parts to our area, we broke it down and came up with ways to describe our object with one statement. There is a few we came up with, but this one was mine…

In our group, number two I believe, ended up with the north east grid of the map. When we walked to we found a barin slope, bitter with a wind that seemed to strip the trees of its bark. After sitting on the slope and looking over San Francisco, the area began to show its true essence. The area had a grove of eucalyptus trees that seemed to perfume the wind that blew through the trees. A man followed his dog around as it played in the leaves that had fallin. On top of the hill there was a balance in nature.

Andy Goldsworthy, Rivers and Tides

Flowing confident art that is conscious and an understanding of Nature.

Andy takes nature and uses it in its own setting to symbolize what is there metaphorically. Seeing his art as translating nature, helps me understand it a little better. His serpentine, which is his mark, symbolizes the flowing of a river. But not just for water, it is the flowing of all things. It is all part of a cycle. Life, death, the groth of plants, rocks, water, air, all flow together to make what is our world. What I really like about Andy is that he would go to a site not knowing what he would do, maybe just an idea. He would then observe the site and let it tell him what would work.

Fibonacci Sequence

The fibonacci sequence is found in nature every were. 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13… The spiral of a pine cone, or a snail is a design that matches this sequence.
